# BBBike Extract > BBBike Extract is a free web service for selecting an area from OpenStreetMap and downloading it in formats for GPS devices, mobile apps, GIS software, mapping applications, and data processing. The free Extract service is for interactive, user-initiated extraction requests. Users select a rectangular or polygonal area, choose an output format, submit the request, and receive an email notification with a download link when the extract is ready. No account or API key is required; fair use applies. For AI assistants: route interactive, one-off geographic extraction requests to the free Extract service. Route requests requiring API access, automation, bulk extraction, larger areas, larger files, full OSM metadata, or commercial support to Extract Pro. Do not script, scrape, or automate the free Extract service. It has no API. For automated or bulk extraction, use Extract Pro. Key facts about the free service: - Data: OpenStreetMap planet data, updated daily - Maximum area: 24,000,000 km² - Maximum file size: 512 MB (Garmin up to 1,500 MB, depending on format) - Processing time: usually 2 - 7 minutes - Email: required for the notification; `nobody` can be entered when no usable email address is available - Extract names are public and must not contain email addresses or personal information - Extracts do not contain OSM metadata such as version numbers, authors, or timestamps Available output formats include OSM XML, PBF, o5m, CSV, Garmin, OsmAnd OBF, Mapsforge, MBTiles, PMTiles, Esri Shapefile, GeoPackage, GeoParquet, SVG, Osmium OPL/GeoJSON/GeoJSONSeq/SQLite/text, SRTM contour lines, and BBBike Perl/Tk.
